I build cloud systems that hold up in production.
I'm Somil Arora, a software developer and final-year Computer Science student at York University. Most recently at IBM, shipping cost-optimization features for Turbonomic across 3 cloud platforms.

Experience
Production work on enterprise cloud software.
IBM · Software Developer Intern
May 2025 – Aug 2026 / Markham, ON
Merged 39+ pull requests and closed 44 Jira tickets across 8 repositories and 3 cloud platforms over 16 months, coordinating delivery with backend, cloud-probe, frontend, and QE teams.
3 microservices
AWS EKS parking support
Delivered end-to-end EKS parking support, extending Turbonomic's managed-Kubernetes cost-optimization coverage and rolling out safely to production behind phased feature flags.
AWS EKSKubernetesFeature flags2 REST endpoints
Full-stack Parking Mode
Designed and shipped a capability spanning new Protobuf/gRPC schemas, service and repository layers, and REST endpoints, giving enterprise customers programmatic control over workload termination vs. suspension.
gRPCProtobufREST8 entity types
AWS probe discovery
Re-architected discovery for cost-optimization deployments by selectively skipping non-essential entity types, cutting unnecessary API calls and reducing pipeline data volume in production.
AWSData pipelines5+ entity types
Azure resource-lock safety
Built a customer-facing safety system on the Azure Resource Manager API, resolving a live enterprise escalation and preventing accidental parking of protected resources.
Azure ARMCustomer escalationRoot cause
Production debugging
Fixed a silent data-correctness bug that was dropping database entities without error, and traced a customer-reported Azure API throttling incident to its source through production log analysis.

Gao Tek Inc. · Tech Support Intern
Oct 2023 – Jan 2024 / Remote
- Cut page load time by 25% and ongoing maintenance effort by 30% through backend query and server-side logic optimization.
- Wrote internal technical documentation that shortened onboarding time by 20% and reduced average ticket resolution time.
- Triaged tickets with developers and support staff in a fully remote team, and communicated resolutions to non-technical stakeholders.

Featured project
Smart Event Processing and Analytics Platform
A real-time, event-driven platform for ingesting, processing, and visualizing high-throughput data streams.
50%faster operational response time
- Built on Java and Spring Boot with Apache Kafka as the event backbone.
- Designed the topic and partitioning strategy so processing workers scale horizontally without downstream reprocessing.
- Built a real-time KPI dashboard in React integrated with AWS QuickSight.
- Decoupled alert delivery from the pipeline using AWS SNS/SQS.

About
Backend and cloud first, curious about everything above them.
I'm a Computer Science student at York University, graduating in April 2027. For the past 16 months I worked as a Software Developer Intern at IBM, where I shipped features across microservices, cloud probes, and customer-facing APIs on Turbonomic.
My work sits at the point where backend engineering meets cloud infrastructure: gRPC schemas, Kubernetes support, feature-flagged rollouts, and production debugging. I also build with LLMs and RAG, and this site's assistant is one example.
